Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

Let me fix it myself

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To enable the hotfix, follow these steps:- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type SNMPLegacy, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click SNMPLegacy, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Note This hotfix does not work if the SNMPLegacy registry entry is set to 0. If this registry entry is set to 1, the print queue status is displayed as "Ready" instead of as "Offline" when a printer device does not respond to SNMP commands. - Exit Registry Editor.

To work around this problem, disable SNMP on the printer port. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
- Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Ports tab.
- Click Configure Port.
- Click to clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box, click OK, and then click Close.
This issues also applies to Windows 8, for example with HP LaserJet printers. The printers are correctly configured with static IP addresses, and are using updated Win8 drivers, and the IP printer port is set with SNMP disabled. However, apparently Win8 is periodically querying the printer via SNMP and setting it offline. Adding the SNMPLegacy registry setting resolves this periodic offline issue.
